3D printed miniature models of large-scale industrial structures, such as buildings, factory plants, and oil refineries, offer numerous advantages beyond traditional 2D graphical layouts. By seeing the spaces in 3D, physical models become valuable in areas such as (1) staff education and continuous development, (2) safety training and emergency preparedness, (3) future design improvements, and (4) planning for scheduled maintenance and repairs. These models are increasingly useful especially where 2D drawings of old plants do not exist or where several improvements have been made over time without proper documentation.
